Recruitment Process Guide
Step one: Application form
Registration
The registration page is where you are asked to complete some basic personal details and register your username and password. This will take you around five minutes to complete. Once you've registered online, here's what you can expect:
Personal details and minimum criteria
If you have done your research and are fully prepared with your personal details ready, this should take you around 15 minutes to complete. We will check that you meet our minimum criteria, so if you’re in any doubt about what you need, check your chosen programme details.
Evidence of your achievements
If you have met our minimum criteria, you will be asked to complete the final section of the application form. This part will capture details regarding your education - school and university, work experience, and professional/financial qualifications. This should take you around 20 minutes to complete.
Please note - if you have studied abroad and have international qualifications please provide your actual grades as we will convert them on your behalf to the UK equivalent.
Step two: Online tests
If your application meets our initial requirements, you will be asked to complete an online competency questionnaire which will give us an indication of your working style. There are 30 sets of questions to answer and it will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Next up - you’ll be asked to complete an online numerical reasoning test. This test measures your reasoning skills, not your mathematical knowledge. You will have the opportunity to complete some examples before you start. However, please note that the test automatically times out after 21 minutes. Make sure each answer you give corresponds to the appropriate question. Please note that if you are invited to attend an assessment centre, you will be required to complete another similar paper-based numerical reasoning test.
You can sit each test at a time that suits you, and to help us process your application quickly, we recommend you complete the tests within 72 hours.
Step three: Telephone interview
If you’ve been successful so far, we’ll invite you to take part in a telephone interview. The interview can take up to 45-minutes and we’ll ask you to expand on your past experience and how it relates to the work we do, to assess how closely you meet the key job criteria for the business area that you have applied to. For advice on how best to approach the interview, take a look at our Top Tips booklet.
Step four: Assessment centre
Next you'll be invited to an assessment centre. These are held in London, Edinburgh, Dublin, and Belfast. Some business areas hold a pre-assessment dinner the night before your assessment centre. Please note that this activity is not assessed. It is purely a way for business managers to meet you before your centre, and an opportunity for you to meet our managers and ask questions about the business.
The final stage, our assessment centre, consists of the five exercises which provide us with a comprehensive picture of your working skills and behaviours.
The group challenge – to see how you work as part of a team.
A presentation/role play – on how you’d approach a given business situation.
Face-to-face interview – with someone from a relevant area of the business.
A planning and organisation exercise to see how good you are at assessing information and prioritising different tasks.
A paper based numerical reasoning test – which follows a similar format to the one you completed online.
We will contact you via email to inform you of dates when and where our assessment centres will be held. We will cover your expenses to attend and, if necessary we will provide you with overnight accommodation. For advice on how best to approach the assessment centre, take a look at our Top tips booklet.
If you're successful, an offer will be made to you and, on acceptance, you'll receive a joining pack and log in detail to our onboarding site to help prepare you for starting your career with The Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
