When I started work at RBS, I was struck by how sociable everyone was. This was especially important to me, as I’d moved from Edinburgh to Manchester, and was able to meet a new circle of friends very easily.

I joined the Group as a Trainee Business Development Manager within Invoice Finance. I’d always wanted to work for a large organisation, and was particularly interested in the provision of business solutions. This was something I’d enjoyed studying at university and liked the idea of translating that into my working career.

The sales side of business also appealed to me, as I like meeting new people and love the challenge of trying to sell a product or service to a potential client. I’m constantly placed in situations where I have to strike up a very quick rapport with new contacts and explain how I can help their business meet its needs.

I’ve found that I’m extremely motivated by the working environment at RBS. It’s competitive, but in a friendly way, and you’re given every opportunity to drive your career forward.

Recently, I spent three days out of the office on an RBS/Invoice Finance Business Challenge. I was required to work as part of a high performance team on a significant business task, identified by the MD and Executive Committee. Working alongside directors and heads of department was an invaluable learning experience, which is actually continuing beyond the initial period.  At the moment, we’re waiting to receive ideas from a range of people across the Group, who work in various business units across the UK.

For me, the brand line ‘Make it happen’ is about showing initiative. At RBS, you need to take ownership of every project and opportunity that comes your way and do everything to a high standard. You’re trusted to be left in charge of your own development, so how your career develops is entirely up to you.
