I joined RBS on the Group Finance Graduate programme in 2005. I’m now working in Global Markets Finance, and will soon be moving to the US for my final placement.
My interest in finance was motivated by the desire to develop an expertise in a key area that underpins all of the business. I’ve had the opportunity to work in several areas of the Group and also to improve my technical skills by studying for my CIMA qualification, which I have recently completed.
In my current role, I work in Credit Markets Decision Support. One of my weekly tasks is to produce a profit and loss account of the Global Markets Business. I then have to relate it to what’s been happening in the markets and business world in general. This is particularly interesting work, as it means I’m constantly adding to my knowledge base, as well as learning about other businesses within my division.
Although my experience at RBS has been uniformly positive, there has been one outstanding highlight. Working in Retail Markets Finance, I played a key role in forecasting future performance and reporting the success of the previous six months. I was responsible for liaising with other finance teams and business managers, and because the team was relatively new, I was given a great deal of responsibility.
It meant working late and over the weekend, but the intensity was engrossing and rewarding. As a result, I won a Finance First award, which included a golf day at Gleneagles, and I was incredibly appreciative of having my efforts recognised.
