I joined RBS on the Group Property graduate scheme. I knew that it would give me a great grounding in the sector, as well as allowing me to retain the flexibility to move into other areas in the Bank in the future, should I wish to. In my three years at RBS, I’ve worked in four distinct roles, which stretched me in very different ways.
Now, I’m Group Property/Business Support Manager for Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa, based in London. The sheer size of RBS’s property portfolio means that there are always lots of different projects on the go, and there are a wide variety of roles and opportunities available.
At the moment, my primary responsibility is for managing the integration of the ABN AMRO property teams across my region. The project is huge, as our presence has grown from eight to 28 European countries. This success brings its own complexities – different languages, currencies, time zones and cultures – all of which add to the enjoyment.
A major highlight of my time at RBS was when I was Customer Service Manager at one of our key London properties. As a major sponsor, we hosted the end of season Formula 1 dinner. It was great to socialise with some of the high profile names who were there, and gratifying that the evening was such a success.
Currently, my main challenge is to keep track of the sheer volume of activity in the Group. As well as liaising with property teams across the region. I’m also coordinating central functions teams, like Projects and Contract Management, to ensure everything runs smoothly and to schedule. It’s not always easy, but it’s impossible not to benefit from so much autonomy and responsibility so early in my career.
Although we all work hard, RBS also places significant importance on balancing it with leisure time. The annual leave entitlement is generous, and it’s good to be somewhere where you know you’ll be looked after.
