Four units, one function
Although effectively four separate units (covering London, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh), Commercial Credit both north and south of the border can be thought of as a single, dedicated function. We assess borrowing applications, prepare credit assessments and make lending decisions for more than 50,000 commercial borrowing relationships, spanning a wide range of business sectors.
Essentially, we’re there to work in partnership with Commercial Relationship Managers; and to provide them with dedicated credit teams that will understand local issues and can support their business growth.
Gaining a first-hand view
Our development programme is structured to give you a close understanding of the complexities of risk and the guiding principles of risk assessment. You will be directly involved in processing lending applications from small and medium-sized enterprises, assessing both financial and other factors to decide whether or not we proceed. It’s all about gaining a first-hand view of how experienced underwriters work with Relationship Managers – and developing your own potential to step into management.
Hard decisions and tight deadlines
Initially, you’ll find yourself on a steep learning curve that will have some challenging moments – you’ll be faced with making difficult decisions that then need to be discussed with Relationship Managers. You’ll need to deliver a consistent high-quality performance, even when working under pressure of tight deadlines. But in return, you’ll acquire a broad and valuable insight into many different types of business, and into how they are affected by the wider economy.
Key experience for your CV
Wherever your banking career might lead, this challenging and rewarding scheme provides an excellent grounding. Credit Risk professionals are in high demand right across our business, so you’ll be gaining skills and knowledge that will equip you for a future in just about any area of the bank, and it’s up to you where you take it from there. Credit experience is seen as essential to many senior roles, and many graduates stay on with us after their training to consolidate their experience.
What we’ll be looking for
In this area of our business, good communication is essential. A valued customer’s business strategy may well hinge on your decision, so it’s important that you can empathise with their position while articulating your own thoughts clearly. We also look for strong and supportive team workers who can build good relationships with the people around them, who can demonstrate an understanding of the issues in detail and exhibit a desire to find workable solutions to any obstacles. That’s why we value the input of people with a natural instinct to challenge, influence and improve the way things are done.
