Balancing growth and risk
Corporate Credit is a dedicated unit that looks after the Bank’s business relationships with some 6,000 mid to large-scale companies and company groups across England and Wales. It’s our role to balance the twin objectives of business growth and risk management. In this, we work closely with the Bank’s Relationship Managers and our credit partners such as Lombard, Corporate Financial Analysis and Royal Bank of Scotland Invoice Finance.

Being an important part of making significant decisions
Our development programme is structured to build a deep understanding of the complexities of risk and the fundamental principles of risk assessment. You’ll be directly involved in processing lending applications from some sizeable business customers, assessing financial and other risk factors, to decide whether or not we proceed.

In the largest cases, based on your analysis, you will be writing comments and making recommendations that will ultimately go to senior bank executives through the Credit Committee process.  Equally, you may be evaluating whether or not a current customer is heading for problems and at what point suitable action may need to be taken. You will gain a first-hand view of how experienced sanctioners work with other credit professionals, product specialists and Relationship Managers – whilst developing your own management potential.

Challenging yourself and building a strong skills base
You will find yourself often challenged by a steep learning curve – you’ll be faced with using your judgement as well as the technical analysis skills you will develop, to make difficult decisions that will need to be discussed with Relationship Managers and ultimately articulated by them to their customers. To broaden your perspective, you are likely to be seconded to other parts of the Bank, to understand how our Credit Partners and Relationship Managers operate and to gain front-line experience of meeting our customers. You will of course have the support and advice of your Line Manager and our dedicated Learning and Development team throughout the programme.

Influencing how we operate whilst developing an insight into the wider business world
From your involvement in the department’s work, you will enjoy a real opportunity to influence the way we do things. Of course, we’ll expect you to deliver a consistent high-quality performance, often working under pressure and to tight deadlines. But in return, you’ll acquire a valuable insight into many different types of business, and how they are affected by their competitors, the market places they operate in, and the wider economy.

Developing your CV and business network
From day one you’ll be building up a network of relationships with both front line staff and our credit partners right across the Bank. Credit Risk professionals remain in high demand across our business, so you’ll be gaining essential skills and knowledge that will equip you for a future in a broad spectrum of areas of the bank – where this leads you is your decision.

What we’ll be looking for
In this area of our business, achieving excellence is expected on a daily basis and strong communications skills are essential. The result of your recommendation or decision will often  have a significant effect on a valued customer, so it’s important that you can empathise with their position whilst being prepared to challenge and maintain a balanced perspective overall, clearly articulating your own thoughts throughout the credit process. We also look for good team workers who can build strong relationships with the people around them, with an ability to quickly absorb and understand what are often complex issues and with the desire to find acceptable solutions to the problems presented.
